At Lesbian Roar Productions we are making a documentary about the ground breaking lesbian activism of the 1970s & 80s, at a time when lesbians were leading from the front of the Women’s Liberation Movement and beyond.
This activism was about the needs of all women, not just lesbians. It was about looking to end the violence against women and girls. It was about looking to achieve legal equality. It was about everything that women struggled against within an imbalanced society, aka patriarchy.
In the 1980s lesbians had reason to change up their activism to look more closely at their own needs within the LGB movement, as it was clear that the majority of any funding was going to the needs of gay men. This saw the emergence of the Lesbian Strength marches in the 1980s, which were predominantly held in London.

This Lesbian Visibility Week 2026, we celebrate the beauty, strength, and diversity of lesbians everywhere. Through a vibrant collection of faces, stories, and moments, this video shines a light on the many ways we exist, love, and thrive.
What led to the Lesbian Strength marches that took place in London, and were later restarted in 2019?
Once again, in 2019, the needs of lesbians had to be brought to the fore and fought for by us. It was almost the same as before, but this time the fight is for our own language and the unique nature of our very female same-sex attracted existence, in a world that has almost always given preference over lesbians to men. Last time it was all the funding to gay men. This time the ‘men’ concerned want to be able to call themselves females and lesbians too, by virtue of their self invented gender identity.
The removal of lesbians from the front of the pride march in Manchester in 2018, which was an action organised by the lesbian grassroots activist group, Get the L Out, is what marks the start of lesbian resistance to gender ideology in the modern era. It was closely followed by the re-emergence of the Lesbian Strength marches in Leeds, West Yorkshire in 2019.
‘Lesbian Strength Lesbian Visibility’ is a documentary that aims to show the strength of lesbian activism over the last 50 years, leaving our personal accounts of that golden age of lesbianism as a reminder of our endless struggle against lesbophobia, homophobia and mysogyny.

Why 'Lesbian Roar Productions'?
Di Winn, the founder of Lesbian Roar Productions was invited to make a speech at a 2023 Labour Party Conference fringe event in Liverpool, organised by Lesbian Labour. At the end of the speech, Di asks that “Mr Keir Starmer, hear our righteous rage and our collective lesbian roar”.
It was a passionate speech, given as it was written and intended, with a voice that was steadier than the hand that held the speech. Lesbian Roar Productions intends to bring our collective lesbian voices to the masses. To project our lesbian herstory in to the future for the lesbians to come to find, so that they might know that we didn’t give up and we never will.
Di Winn remains an active lesbian feminist activist, who has been part of a number of activist groups, including more recently the Lesbian Strength Collective from 2022 to 2025. It is the ‘boots on the ground’ activism that gives her the most joy, and she can often be found outside a female prison, holding banners on marches or other places a banner is needed.
